Explore Italy’s Venice the way it was meant to be experienced – on a canal cruise
By Scott Wells
Why go?

Think of Venice and you think of gondolas, beautiful buildings and its world-famous canals – and it’s on the water that you’ll enjoy the best experience of this magical city. It’s a convenient and romantic way to soak up the sights and the sounds, not mention sample some delicious food along the way. Hop across the lagoon to Murano to see the intricate work of the glassblowers, and tour the neighbouring island of Burano with its handmade lace and technicolour houses. Venice is a feast for the senses and this is the way to see it in style.
All aboard!

The MS Michelangelo is your home from home. Moored at St Mark’s Square, right in the heart of the city, there are two decks for up to 154 passengers and everything is all-inclusive. On board there’s a restaurant, lounge bar and sun deck where you can enjoy morning fitness classes. One of the biggest benefits to being on board is waking up to some of Venice’s best known sights, right outside your window. And there’s also an exciting gala evening on the last night of the trip.
Plates of joy

The elegant on-board restaurant serves up delicious dishes from succulent roast pork to tangy cheeses, all accompanied by perfectly paired wines. Your tastebuds will be treated as you take in the panoramic views. If you want to venture off the boat for dinner, we recommend you try bigoli, long pasta usually served in a sauce made from the catch of the day in the lagoon. It’s a Venetian classic, as is the bellini served at Harry’s Bar – a definite must-try while you’re here.
Day trips

Another advantage of travelling by boat is that you can enjoy a varied itinerary with plenty of hidden treasures. A trip to the colourful island of Burano (around £58pp) is well worth it. From here, take the water taxi over to Murano to see century-old techniques still being used today to create the most beautiful blown glass. The food tour of little-known neighbourhoods (around £68pp) included the gorgeous Rialto market, and you can also explore Padua (around £65pp) and the grand gardens at Prato della Valle.
Go explore

One of the joys of this city is getting lost in the winding narrow streets as you wander beside the 150 canals. You’ll find gems, such as Libreria-Acqua-Alta, a library where books are stored in baths to protect them from flooding, or Chiesa di Santa Maria Formosa, a quiet square to watch the world go by. Admire the basilica and the Doge’s Palace – a venue which is rich in fascinating history. If you want a break from exploring, then stop off for some traditional cicchetti and a glass of wine at one of the little bars you’ll find on most corners. Wherever you wander, you’re never far from your floating hotel.
