Picturesque ports in Majorca

Majorca

Majorca is the biggest of the Balearics and one of the most popular, with thousands of tourists flocking to the main resorts. But head to the northern coast, home to the Serra Tramuntana Mountain range, and you’ll discover some truly stunning coastal scenery and a different side to the island. Here you’ll find quirky villages with a more intimate vibe, including the beautiful town of Deia, which is known for its local traditions and welcoming hospitality. The region is perfect for hiking, as well as swimming in the calm coves of Cala Deia and Cala Estellence. For some stunning views, don’t miss the retro wooden train, which winds its way through orange groves to connect the capital Palma with the historic and picture-perfect town of Soller. When you arrive, be sure to head down to Port de Soller, a beautiful seaside port resort with some of the most stunning sunset views. We’d also recommend a few nights in Cala Figuera, located in the southeast, a working fishing village with no beaches but the port is surrounded with cafés where the locals hang out. The surrounding houses are all white, with green shutters that are reflected in the crystal-clear waters.

  • Stay at the 5T Hotel Es Moli Deia for seven nights on a bed and breakfast basis, from £1065pp, flying from Gatwick on 17 July with Tui.co.uk.

Luxurious lakeside retreat

Formentera

If you’re looking for smooth white sandy beaches and warm waters, then Formentera fits the bill. It’s often referred to as Ibiza’s little sister but has a more laid-back vibe. With no airport, you arrive via boat from Ibiza into the La Savins harbour. Due to the ban on seafront development, the beaches are pristine, with no huge hotels or bars ruining the beautiful surroundings. The best beaches include Platja Migjorn, which has a wild feel surrounded by dunes and seagrasses, and Platja Illetes on the northern tip of the island – a narrow beach surrounded by shallow calm water that’s perfect for snorkelling. Despite the island’s size, there’s plenty to keep you busy including the capital Sant Francesc Xavier, full of shops selling leather bags and locally made goods. The food scene is great here too – so enjoy all the delicious tapas.

  • Stay at Entres Pinos, Formentera, for seven nights, including breakfast from £674pp, including flights from 1 June from London Gatwick with Lastminute.com.

Natural views in Gran Canaria

Puerto de Mogan

Head to the north of the island for spectacular mountain passes and the Caldera de Bandama (a volcanic crater), and take in the stunning panoramic views. Hike through the interior of the island’s subtropical forests; Parque Natural de Pilancones in San Bartolomé de Tirajana is the perfect place to explore. The soft sandy beaches are in the south of the island, and in the resort of Maspalomas you’ll find the golden dunes. One of the prettiest towns is Puerto de Mogan on the southwest coast. Its narrow, cobbled streets are lined with traditional white houses. There’s also a fancy harbour with stunning yachts, and you can enjoy tasty tapas from one of the many tavernas on the harbour’s edge.

  • Stay at the 4* Barcelo Margaritas, from £549pp travelling between 1-30 September 2022. Includes breakfast, return flights from London Gatwick with British Airways Holidays (Britishairways.com/holidays).

Escapism in Tabarca

Tabarca

This small island just off the coast of Alicante has a fantastic all-year-round climate, beautiful coves and beaches and is the perfect spot for some peace and quiet. The best way to get to the island is a boat from mainland Spain, while taking in the views of the coastline. The island offers some amazing food and plenty of lovely views when dining on terraces or rooftops. Swimming and diving are a big draw, as the island is a protected marine reserve and the underwater views are amazing. There’s some beautiful scenery and lots of spectacular historic areas to visit, including the gates of San Rafael and the church of San Pedro. You can also enjoy a walk through the old town and surrounding cobbled streets.

  • Stay at the Boutique Isla Tabarca from £100 a night including breakfast, with booking.com. Return flights from Birmingham to Alicante from £90pp with jet2.com.
